These photos were taken in August in a farmer’s garden in Suffolk and in my own back garden.  The Bees are seen working on gathering nectar which is a sugary fluid secreted within flowers to encourage pollination by insects and other animals and is collected by bees to make into honey.

In these photos the bees are harvesting Nectar from Lavender plants and Buddleja or Buddleia  plants which are more commonly known as the butterfly bush.

There are around 20,000 different species of Bee in the world. Here in the Uk we have around 250 species made up of approx 24 species of bumblebees and 225 species of solitary bee and just a single honeybee species.

Most of the images in this gallery are of Bumblebees and they look quite different from honeybees and solitary bees. There are also images of the Carder Bee, Honey Bee and white tailed bumblebee in the main Bee Gallery.

A bee can be social or solitary. The Social bee lives in a group.  Honeybees are particularly sociable and can live in groups of up to 50,000 together in a single hive.

Bumblebees are also social, but live in smaller groups of 50-150. Both types depend on queen bees who lay all of the eggs for the group.single hive.

As the name suggests, the solitary Bee lives on its own.  It will make a burrow underground or live in the face of a quarry, old wood or even masonry. A female solitary bee builds her nest and provides food for her young without the help of any worker bees. There are over 250 kinds of solitary bee.
