The City of London Beadle’s Guild Installation Dinner 2016 was a glittering event which saw Allan Petrie installed as Chairman of the Guild.

The annual event was held at the historic Grocers’ Hall which has been the home of the Worshipful Company of Grocers since 1426.

Allan, who is the Beadle at the Worshipful Company of Grocers welcomed his fellow Beadles from many of the City of London Livery Companies, along with his chief guests Sheriff Charles Bowman (Alderman) and his wife Samantha.

Entertainment for the City of London Beadles’ Guild Installation Dinner 2016 was provided by Tenorissimi. Inspired by the three tenors the group is composed of musicians from Greece, Italy, Portugal and Spain. Tenorissimi focuses its repertoire in Neapolitan, Italian, English and Spanish songs with some extraordinary arias from the renowned Operatic world.  Their performances are mainly composed of trios and medleys where the audience is able to appreciate individual operatic interpretation.

Their performance on the night was simply extraordinary and was much appreciated by the guests as they cheered and clapped waving their napkins in the air and shouting “encore….encore” at the end of the performance.

The Beadle’s Guild was formed in 1992 with the aim of uniting all Livery Company Beadles for social events, to preserve the traditions of the City of London and the Livery Companies and to assist or advise newly-appointed Beadles in matters of protocol.

It has now grown to accommodate Hall Managers and others of similar employment within the Livery Companies, and also assists in providing replacement Beadles to Livery Companies at short notice when their own Beadle is unable to perform his duties due to illness or incapacity.

The Guild meets quarterly to discuss pertinent matters and to raise charitable funds.Beadle, sometimes spelled “bedel” is derived from the Latin “bidellus” or “bedellus”, rooted in words for “herald.” He was originally an official of the Roman Temple. The word Beadle has also been used to describe early policemen and church or parish wardens.
